Nigerian League All Stars lose 1-2 to Valencia in tightly contested match

The All star team from the Nigeria Professional Football league despite putting up a brave display at the Mestalla stadium last night, lost 1-2 to top Spanish club Valencia.  Valencia scored in the 10th minute through Alvaro Medran, Joseph Osadiaye equalized in the 32nd minute but despite the NPFL's all star tactical prowess they were left stunned by a Rodrigo Moreno winner with six minutes left on the clock. The NPFL All star team will continue their La Liga tour with a match against UEFA Champions League and Spanish Laliga runners–up Atletico Madrid and Malaga  on Friday .

Colombia defeated Nigeria 2-0 in Sao Paulo  on Wednesday  night/ Thursday  morning to reach the quarter–finals of the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016, but the result didn't matter much to Samson Siasia's men who already had booked a place in the quarter-final prior to kick off.

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has signed a new four-year contract with the Premier League champions. The 64 year old Italian, led the Foxes to their first top-flight title in his first season of managing the club, a title win that surprised the world of sports.

Manchester United sign Paul Pogba from Juventus for £100m (photos)

Manchester United have completed the world-record £100 million signing of 23 year old Paul Pogba. Pogba who has been termed as the world's most in-demand midfield talent arrives from Juventus, to rejoin Manchester United, the club that he left for next to nothing in 2012. Pogba, is expected to wear the No 6 shirt and has signed a £290,000-per-week, five-year contract to work under Jose Mourinho. There is also the option to extend for a further year.

  It only took a goal from Umar Sadiq in the 40th minute to ensure Nigeria's Olympic football team at Rio 2016 qualified for the quarter-final stage of the competition in a Group B match at the Arena Amazonia on Monday morning.. Samson Siasia started with the same starting eleven that played the match against Japan but Umar Aminu had to start from the bench.

22-time Olympic medal winning swimmer Michael Phelps won his 19th gold medal (23rd overall) as part of the men's 4x100m freestyle relay team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He swam the second leg of the relay for Team USA and was cheered on by his girlfriend Nicole Johnson, who sat with their son Boomer, and mom Deborah. More photos after the cut...

Jose Mourinho after guiding Man U to a 2-1 win over Leicester City in the community shield on Sunday has dedicated the trophy to former Man U coach Louis Van Gaal. Louis Van Gaal was sacked at the end of last season despite leading the team to win the FA cup title, and Mourinho, his friend who replaced the Dutchman after overseeing his new side's 2-1 win over Leicester City at Wembley decided to dedicate the win to his former Barcelona colleague as well as seven first-team players left out the match squad.

Venus and Serena Williams lose Olympic doubles match for the 1st time

Three-time doubles champions and gold medalists, sisters Serena and Venus Williams lost an Olympic match as partners for the first time, by losing in the opening round of the Rio de Janeiro Games to Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova by 6-3, 6-4. The Williams sisters entered Sunday's match with a 15-0 career record in the Olympics, winning the gold medal in women's doubles every time they entered the event: in 2000, 2008 and 2012.

German coach Gernot Rohr to be unveiled on Monday as new Super Eagles Technical adviser

63 year old former Gabon, Burkina Faso, Nantes, Nice and Bordeaux coach, Gernot Rohr, will be unveiled on Monday in Abuja by the Nigeria Football Federation as its new technical adviser. According to Sporting Sun, the German and two of his assistants will arrive Nigeria on Saturday after agreeing to the NFF terms which include living in Nigeria and qualifying the county for the next World Cup.

Footballer's ear is partly ripped off after horror challenge in club friendly

Jeremy Menez who only just signed for French side, Bordeaux from AC Milan endured a painful debut on his first appearance. Barely fifteen minutes into the pre-season game against Lorient, Menez had part of his ear ripped off when Lorient FC midfielder Didier Ndong accidentally stepped on the right side of his head, lodging his stud into the ear of the 29 year old and causing the freak injury.

Tennis Champion Serena Williams finally clinched a record 22nd grand slam singles title in the Wimbledon final today. The world number one is now tied with Steffi Graf at the top of the open era women's champions list and just two short of Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 titles.
