NANS Leadership: A Betrayal of Students' Trust By Comrade Ajibade Kehinde Daniel, President, OSCOTECH Students' Union
The essence of leadership within the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is to represent the collective interests of students. Sadly, it appears that both the NANS national and zonal leaderships have lost sight of this sacred mandate. Their recent actions or lack thereof have not only sidelined the students they claim to serve but have also cast a shadow of doubt on the credibility of the association.
The case of the Osun State Joint Campus Committee (JCC) is a glaring example of this betrayal. After a fair and transparent decision made by the majority of institutions, the leadership of Solomon Ayobami Abel was collectively endorsed by the students. This decision reflected the trust and confidence reposed in him by a wide spectrum of stakeholders. However, certain individuals within the NANS structure are working tirelessly to overturn this popular mandate, thereby undermining the sanctity of the association and its democratic processes.
What makes this situation even more disheartening is the failure of NANS national and zonal representatives to be physically present on the ground despite clear indications of plots to overturn the students' decision. These representatives were expected to stand firm in defense of the majority’s voice, which was clearly expressed through the presidents. Their absence sends a dangerous signal of complacency or complicity, further undermining students' trust in the leadership.
Moreover, the insistence on conducting this election multiple times not only undermines the credibility of the process but also poses a serious threat to the safety of all students involved. The heightened tensions have created fertile ground for extremists to plot attacks, making the situation perilous for everyone. The safety of students must never be sacrificed on the altar of political scheming and self-interest.
This is not just an affront to Solomon Ayobami Abel; it is a blatant disregard for the will of the students. By attempting to subvert the collective decision of Osun students, these individuals are eroding the very foundation of student representation. Instead of standing as the voice of the voiceless, the NANS leadership has chosen to side with personal interests, shying away from the truth and turning the association into a puppet for external influences.
We, the students of Osun State, will not stand idly by while the sanctity of our association is threatened. We call on the NANS national and zonal leadership to remember their mandate and uphold the decisions of the students they claim to represent. The leadership of Solomon Ayobami Abel is a product of our collective voice, and any attempt to undermine it is an attack on all of us.
As President of the OSCOTECH Students’ Union, I stand with the majority of institutions that have trusted Solomon Ayobami Abel's leadership. I urge all stakeholders to resist the machinations of those who seek to divide us.
The safety, unity, and interests of students must remain paramount. Anything less is unacceptable.
